22nd Space Station Utilization Workshop-Outline

The 22nd Space Station Utilization Workshop was jointly sponsored by the Science and Technology Agency and NASDA, and held with the support of 28 academic groups including the Japan Society for Microgravity Applications. The workshop was held over three days between Wednesday June 28th and Friday June 30th 2000 at the Sabo Hall, Shoenbacher Sabo (2-7-5, Hirakawa-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), and was attended by 345 participants on Day 1, 284 on Day 2, and 188 on Day 3, a total of 817 participants. Activities proved very successful.

The workshop was held to introduce both Japanese and overseas research activities related to utilization of the space station to users to improve their understanding of the research, and to hear directly opinions of users, and thus facilitate incorporation of these opinions into policy.

Assembly of the International Space Station in orbit has begun. The Russian Service Module (Zvezda) was launched in July, and development of the Hope Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) is proceeding on schedule for launch in 2004 and 2005, and subsequent use. This workshop included considerable discussion and exchange of opinions among participants on planning for flight announcements and public ground research, development of new uses for the module, and planning and status of preparations for use of its exposed facility.

The morning of Day 1 of the workshop consisted of lectures on the planned strategy for utilization of the space station from personnel of the Science and Technology Agency and organizations from the US, Europe and Canada. In the afternoon, personnel from NASDA explained the current status of preparations for the use of the JEM, the current use of the system for research related to utilization of the space station, the system for announcing international life science and microgravity science experiments, the status of selection of public ground research, and the status of preparations for precursor missions. Strategies for advanced applied research were also discussed.

Day 2 began with an explanation by NASDA personnel of the manner in which themes for experiments aboard the JEM are announced. This was followed by a vigorous discussion of the methodology for flight announcements and public ground research in the fields of microgravity science, the life sciences, and space medicine. Further discussions were concerned with future utilization of the module for the purposes of research in the fields of human sciences and basic physics, and planning for experiment management.

Day 3 consisted of an exchange of experiences between research personnel from Japan, the US, and Europe on the use of the exposed facility. During this exchange, NASDA and the overseas space organizations introduced the strategies and status of preparations for utilization of the facility. This was followed by a wide-ranging discussion between all research personnel on the possibility of international co-operation in planning utilization of the facility in the fields of earth sciences, remote earth monitoring, space science and astronomy, and the development of space technologies.
